During the Aether war, large numbers of Aether and nuclear devices were used upon the middle east. Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran and areas of Jordan took major damage, nearly compeletly wiped out. The resulting bombardments massively reshaped the terrian, causing tectonic upheavel and making the landscape into one that looked very alien. Millions were killed and the region descended into lawlessness. However, the shattered remains of goverments and the thousands of displaced US troops in the region banded together to create a safe haven for the few scattered survivors. What followed was a slow process of rebuilding, as the agricultural system was compeletly destroyed, while once fertile areas had been converted into hot, searing deserts. Tempratures rose to create a very hostile enviroment, while a new form of Moderate Islamism defeated it's extremist opponents, allowing for religious freedom and a stable nation, formed around the great city of Jannāt Adni.
Culture:
The culture is mostly middle eastern, with a small smattering of weastern influences. Music and entertaiment is popular though with the more limited rescources than in other parts of the word.
Buildings: Jannāt Adni is a modern city, build of out huge towering structures, holding hundreds of thousands of apartments. Large awnings project from the lower levels to sheild the packed streets below from the scorching hot sunlight. The streets below are lit with millions of neon shades, large signs broadcasting advertisements, religous teachings and news articles. To collect power, huge antannae are used to seive the sky of Aether energy, drawing it down into huge transformers below. Jannāt Adni has often been called, "The city of vines" as thousands upon thousands of electrical cables form a network from building to building, like some immense spiders web in the sky.
Government. The government is made up of three leaders, know as Sultans. These three equally share the power, though for matters of supreme importance, all three must agree on an action. Each Sultan is democratically elected, and each comes with a small, supporting cabinet of advisers.
The army is know as the "Janissaries" and is small. It's mostly based on the doctrines of the United States Army, though integrated with Islamic ideals. Railweapons are used alongside conventional firearms alongside focus heat weaponry.
Large amounts of munition based weapons and equipment still remain from before the Aether war, like T90 and M1A1 tanks, several having undergone modifications for rail or Heat weaponry.
Population: The population of Jannāt Adni is roughly half human, with the rest being mostly middle eastern anthros, with common examples being: Jackals, snakes, cows, donkeys, horses, oxen, goats, sheep, camels and hawks. Due to the revolutions in theology, there is little prejudice against these races, though outsiders are frowned upon.
Crime: Though Jannāt Adni is a utopia at first glance, a large criminal underworld is at work. Operating from the dockyards and poorer, denser quarters of the city, murder, extortion, drugs, human trafficking and gun running is very common. Many major figures within the government have links within the underworld, making sure any attempts to root out corruption are quickly ceased. So far, they have managed to survive any purges. As a result, many of the average citizens are wary of the crimelords and organisations that can easily destroy their lives should they wish.
Technology. The technology of the City of Vines is highly developed. Power is sucked out of the aether-rich atmosphere and ran along the millions of electrical and fibre-optic cables to power the bright neon lights that makes the whole city glow brightly through the night. Oil and petrol based products are still around, but rare as the oil supplies are strictly controlled. In lieu of cites in the past, huge screens are used to market the latest goods and entertainment, though these are only turned on a night, as the heat of the day makes them prone to overheating.
Water converters are also a major resource. Aether generators absorb particles that drift across from destroyed Iran which in turn power the desalination plants that clean the seawater and convert it into drinking and bathing water.
Biases: Jannāt Adni have few biases based on race, though outsiders are viewed with mistrust. The one main bias is against those of the Cursed Family. Members are veiwed with great mistrust, often being arrested and detained, indefinitely if they have dangerous curses.
Violent members have bene known to be executed by police, military forces or even mobs.
Religion: Radical Islam was successfully purged following the Aether wars, though minor sects remain. As a result, a moderate form of the religion regains, with allowance for aethism and agnostics to exist. Traditional Arab wear still remains in places, though has become more of a fashion statement than one of religion
. Several large mosques have been built throughout the city, available for use to any citizen. There is a single small, Christian church as the cities Christian population is very small.
