The sounds of beeps and machinery faded in, and it became apparent to him that it was time to wake up. Max opened his heavy eyelids.
Black, everything was just black, sort of like when you are in a room with absolutely no light and it makes no difference when you close your eyes. Max could feel the coldness in the cryo pod he laid in and smell the cold, stale air, but all he could see was darkness. He thought his eyes were still closed, but when he opened his eyelids with his fingers, nothing changed, it was still a pitch black void.
Max felt weary and sick, like the world around him was spinning. He could summon no strength to get up, it was like part of his body was still asleep. At this thought, Max considered returning to his slumber, not like he could do much else. He closed his eyes again, and quickly fell asleep.
When he woke up again, Max felt warm air and heard the machinery around him at work. He opened his eyes again and saw something other than just darkness. The pod he laid in was now open, and the room was dimly lit. There were chairs, desks, and tables, but there was nobody around using them, no a person in sight.
"Good morning Max," a female robotic voice spoke, startling Max, "We hope that you've slept well." Max sat up and darted his eyes all around, there was no one there. "Thank you for participating in this project," it continued, "We are glad to say that this experiment has proven to be a success. When you're ready, one of our staff will guide you to-" The audio cut into static all of the sudden, with beeping error codes until it came back, "....good day, and thank you for you contribution to science!" The voice was gone now, the only sound being a humming noise in the background.
Max took off the mask on his face, and the device around his arm undid itself for him to remove. He got out of the cryo pod and stood up, taking a while to get a sense of his balance. When he stopped wobbling around, he searched all around the room. There was nothing and nobody here, like it had been long abandoned. Thinking about it, how long was he asleep?
With nothing else to look at in there, Max left for the room's exit and ended up in the large tunnel hallway he once walked through. It didn't seem any different, but the lighting was much dimmer than before, it almost looked like a scene out of the X-Files or some horror movie set in a military complex. The end of it wasn't visible. There was not a living soul in sight, and it was almost dead silent. Naturally, Max didn't make a lot of noise, he breathed silently and his footsteps were quiet, but as he moved down the hall, he heard his footsteps echo and his heart beating. There was no other noise, nothing at all, he was really all alone. If there was anyone here, he would've met them already.
Max began to move faster, each step getting louder. His walk turned into a jog, and then his jog became a run. He remembered one episode from Hunter x Hunter where the characters had to keep up with one guy in a seemingly endless tunnel, and laughed at the situation, while hoping that he would reach the end soon. After thinking this, the end of the hall suddenly became visible, and he felt relief in this.
When he reached the end, Max found the elevator that he took down to here from before. Hoping that the damn thing still worked, Max pressed the button to go up. The doors opened up, and he stepped in, beginning his ascent. The trip felt long, and during this time Max thought about the situation. He wondered how long he was in cryogenic hibernation, when he last saw this place it was well lit and clean, but now the air was stuffy and it looked worn down as if it had been abandoned for a long time. There was nobody at all, not even signs of any recent life. He hoped that he would find the answers to the questions on his mind, he just wanted to know what had happened.
The elevator doors finally opened, and Max walked into a familiar reception area. As expected, it was dimly lit and there was not a soul in sight, but something stood out. A mess of papers laid in front of the reception desk. Max walked over to examine it, and was shocked by what was written on it.

"A disaster?" Max thought long and hard. Before he signed up for the job, he didn't hear of any big events going on that could pertain to what the paper described. Did the apocalypse come to claim everything while he was asleep?
Max wanted to see for himself if there was still a world outside, so he rushed for the elevator he took before to enter the complex. The doors slid open, and he stepped inside, going up. His heart beat faster with every second, he was having a difficult time comprehending the possibility of the end of the world, and anxiously waited for the answer as the elevator ascended. Max worried about the possibility of being able to go outside safely, but it wasn't like he had any other options. A ding soud brought him back to the present time, and the doors opened up. Max walked out of the elevator and into the small building that housed it. At the exit door he saw light seeping through the small window on the door, but he couldn't see anything outside. He took a deep breath, then opened the door.
Max was hit by fresh, warm desert air, and momentarily blinded by sunlight. When his vision adjusted, he saw the landscape of a Californian desert, with cacti, sage, and other plants. Max was happy to see life, even if it was just plants. "Doesn't look so bad out here," he said to himself, admiring the view of the sun climbing the horizon, bringing a new day. As he looked around though, Max saw odd rock structures that looked like tall towers and unfamiliar flora. Maybe the world didn't end, but it did change.
