Place: Louisiana. USA
Name: The Sunken Collective (Marsh Squatters)
Information: During the wars that ravaged the world, the coastal Bayous of the Mississippi have become irradiated and foul and spread out across the land, covering much larger area than the once did. Aether bombs weren't used as much in the coast, whereas chemical and biological weaponry was more commonplace. Millions of tonnes of sewage and waste was pumped into the marshes before the bombs, creating horrific algal blooms and an unholy stench that permeates the land. The rising sea levels have made sure that the land is constantly flooded and the fauna of the Bayou have been warped and twisted. However, a large collective of settlements have been established throughout the area, mainly located in old disused power stations, beached ships or rotting family mansions. These people known as the Sunken Collective, are determined to colonise the area and scrape a living out the filthy marsh. They came to the filthy swamps, trying to establish a new life for themselves, away from the machinations, wars and dangers that the world faces, many with the full knowledge of how terrible life would be. The settlements are spaced out over a wide area, though in places are clumped close together. The air is constantly hot and humid, intermingled with heavy rains, storms, floods and the foul stench of the marshes.
Culture: The people of the Sunken Collective are in close knit groups, usually operating out of secure homesteads; several of these are in old hydroelectric power plants that supply sufficient defences for those living inside. Upon the discovery of a new area for colonisation; be it a beached ship, sewage plant or run-down dock, a group will be selected from within the inhabitants and tasked with colonising the settlement. After armed guards move in, breeding programs are quickly established amongst the group to populate the colony rapidly, virility and fertility are often status symbols. Soon, the By this method, a single large settlement can create several smaller allies that can offer a network of support and resources. Many work as hunters, logger or in the small farms the colony runs. Food comes from farms, shrimp swarms, shellfish and other aquatic life. When the sea floods inland, it brings detritus and waste in from the coasts or ocean; many work as scavengers to comb the mask looking for useful technology or materials to sell at the markets. In a culture where breeding of new colonies is vital, doctors and midwives are trained to the highest possible degrees while medicine is bought or traded from outside the region. The Bayou itself is an unhealthy place to live, so all settlements are built to withstand the pollution and bad air that are mainstays of life. Inhabitants have strong family ties, many being related with different families gaining more power and influence than others. All waste and bodies are burned, to prevent them being claimed by the rot of the swamp and adding to the hostility that took their lives.
Technology: There is some technology, particularly within the larger settlements where Aether generators give power to the whole colony, creating towns that are reminiscent of the neon-lit cites across Cyden, but they are mainly a low-tech group. However some technologies had been outfitted and modified to work in the foul swamps. Airboats and launches have been modified to work on Aether energy as well as combustible fuels to move around the more navigable Most colonies also run water purifiers to turn the toxic water into something drinkable and therefore making the hostile environment liveable. As disease carrying insects pose great threats, large repellent devices are placed inside colonies; bugs are attracted to the neon lights but are quickly destroyed by pure tendrils Aether energy that the boxes emit. Hand held units are also in widespread use, shooting arcs of electricity to burn bug swarms. Flame units are also vital in combating the many diseases and plagues that the bugs can carry or the parasitic larvae of some of the new isopod species. Though these have to be used carefully, lest they ignite swamp gas clouds.
Majority: The majority of the Sunken Collective are anthromorpics. Most common are wild cats like panthers, leopards and lynxes alongside large numbers of bovines and equines that seeked safety in the region. Porcines, amphibians and reptiles are also very common in the area as they are used to the wet and dirty conditions.
Minority: Humans are very much in the minority in the Bayou with barely any living there. As most of the residents are immigrants or desperate, many humans despised the idea of living in such a foul environment and could afford better accommodation. The few that do often occupy high positions in settlements, or are usually loners.
Caution: The huge amounts of sewage and waste pumped into the swamps accounts for a noxious stink throughout the area as well as high numbers of diseases that fester in the mud and waste. Most inhabitants have gained immunity to these but newcomers are likely to be susceptible. Areas of the swamps are very polluted or irradiated and are best avoided. The waters are also rife with leeches as well as providing ample breeding space for mosquitoes which also carry a plethora of pathogens. Chemical runoff has resulted in some mosquito breeds growing to large unnatural sizes (17cm wingspans). Aquatic isopods and crawfish have been affected with similar results, growing to large sizes and attacking . Most worrying are the mutated breeds of crocodile and alligator; specimens are recorded to be between five or seven meters long and far more violent than natural strains. The most prevalent non-natural dangers are small roving groups of pirates and bandits, operating in the murky swamps who attack caravans or settlements. While unable to do much against a fully-established settlement, it is ill advised to be caught by some while out in the swamps.
Life:
Bayou Alligator: Massive creatures reaching over 6-7 meters long through rampart mutation and exposure to the toxic swamps. Their hides are riddled with growths, lumps, callouses and tumors which makes them near impenetrable to standard calibre ammunition. They are stalkers, following their prey through the marsh before attacking when the moment is right. Their dark colouration serves as an effective camouflage which allows them to get as closer as possible before attacking. Their temperament is highly aggressive, even more so than the American Alligator from which they are evolved from, leading to high numbers of attacks and incidents.
Bayou Crocodile: Descended from the American crocodile, the Bayou Croc is larger, growing to around 7 to 8 meters long. Their temperament also differs, being less violent and more patient than their Alligator cousins. They are also less mutated, resulting in higher numbers of healthy and strong infants, and as they are less of a threat to the residents, they are not hunted. Even then, their ferocious bite and overlapping plates of armour makes them an incredibly dangerous animal once provoked.
