A list of major events in the history of Cyden. In no particular order.
This will be updated as it becomes important.
The Model T of Space
Roughly 150 years ago, a man manufactured and produced a very cheap and easy to use space ship. While space exploration was available before, it was expensive and tough to do. This new barely-not-a-rocket-strapped-to-a-seat caused people to leave and explore in much greater numbers. Greater than most countries could manage, actually. Space for a long time became this new frontier and a massive effort was made to claim your own land or your own planets to yourself or your family. Many people died just trying to leave the atmosphere due to the shoddy construction of the spacecraft, but more than enough made it to encourage others to try as well.
This was all well and good, but not a single country had a law in place as to who or what would count as owned by these people, or what to do with them. Many places claimed that the people leaving their country count as still part of their country, and such their land is owned by them. Others claimed that they are all illegal and should be punished or killed. This led to a great many disputes. In fact, it never got truly resolved until just recently in Cyden history. Up until now, people could buy a spacecraft and just leave and take their chances off of the planet at a new life. They weren't doing anything technically illegal, so they were never punished. Now the whole of the planet's governing bodies have agreed that the people that now claimed land out in space own that land that they have worked to achieve. With this law's passage, a new group has sprung up backed by the planetary governments to get first contact with these people in the hopes to set up trading and new colonies. The Planetary Scouting Initiative, or PSI was its name. Now they are tracking down these planetary gold digger people and their families that still live and are attempting to make first contact.
The Aether War
Like a second cold war, tensions were high. Rivalries were brought up. Lines were drawn. Weapons were brought to bear. A new type of bomb was created. That specific bomb is unnamed, but its intent was to blow a hole in the earth large enough to ensure your target will not survive, along with irradiating the surrounding areas to be unlivable. Unlike the cold war though, someone pulled the trigger. Whether is was an accident, someone trying to get the upper hand, or a third party intervention it doesn't matter anymore. Everyone launched their missiles. The landscape was changed entirely with major cities like Berlin and Beijing were destroyed. The Great lakes were turned into one large near-ocean. These are only a few of the changes made. But more importantly, it started created Aether and changed how the world worked from then on. The radiation was a different type that actually never harmed anyone. Whether it was a mistake or something went wrong with the production of the weapons its uncertain. However it allowed people to power things previously thought impossible to run rationally.
That discovery was far later though. After the bombings the planet was in turmoil. Governments were overthrown, currencies went to crap, social standards were dropped, and most places closed their gates to everyone. It took many many years to recover from this disaster. As such, a lot of things from before this time were forgotten or abandoned. Including some facets of history. As such, a lot of things are considered "Pre-War" and "Post-War" events. With no one really being certain when the war exactly was.
