The Great Ship Exodus was one of the biggest surprises of the Pre-Aether War era. Atleast a hundred starships, all sailing into the cyclopean void of horror known as Outer Space in search of a new home. One such home was Keratoze, having recently entered its fourth century post-planetfall. The quartet of ships that flew there were the biggest possible within the cost-efficiency measures of the infamous Exodus design, its passengers fast asleep in stasis while the shipboard AI's steered the crafts to their destination for lifespan upon lifespan until arrival.
Planetfall was made and the colonists took their first breaths...only to begin choking on the alien gas exuded by the planets' flora before fleeing to the ships for respirators. The settlers toiled to make this world habitable, from artificially generating oxygen to developing vaccines for the exotic pathogens on the planet. It has been four hundred years since those harsh times and a stable society has been more or less formed on the planet, its citizenry consisting primarily of halfbreeds and the occasional thawed or vat-grown purebreeds. Earth and the solar system are but childs' tales now, some lunatics even questioning said celestial bodies' existance at this point, so distant is the colony.
On one of the continents, a weapons manufacturer made their settlements, vast databanks allowing their technology to skyrocket while other landers were still erecting prefab shelters and hydroponic farms. This weapons company would grow into what would be known to outsiders as "The Citizens", living in domed cityscapes and treating their piece of planet as a playground.
Some, however, became dissatisfied or even horrified by Citizen life, wishing for more freedom and/or having seen something dreadful behind closed doors. These, along with liberated examples of the Citizens' "Controlled" workers, end up destroying their ID chip and joining the Bio Nomads outside of the cities, wandering, exploring, revelling and sometimes fighting. It is a vastly more carefree, but also a vastly more dangerous life.
And finally, there are The Missionaries. They had their start as a cult that infiltrated the weapons' companies ship, hoping to "Build civilization on the new world after the old, immoral one is destroyed". During planetfall, they stole some of the technology from the burdgeoning citizens and erected a single city state lined with oversized gauss-proof plates and now out-dated gauss turrets. Life inside the Missionary compound is described as "Fuckin' Stupid" by the Nomads and "Backwards" by the Citizens, being a conservative theocracy that shuns any augmenation that involves replacing body parts with machinery and/or bioware. Until recently, they dwelled in isolation but are now sending emissaries to the outside world. How this will work out exactly is unknown so far.
