New Dawn Library article 7134569: Original manuscript of "A General over view of the Australian and New Zealand area" by controversial Explorer David Ilion Carlson Kaiser.
• Where? Australia and New Zealand are two land masses found in the southern hemisphere to the west of the ring of fire, water movements and earth shift have created a shallow bridge between the two, allowing transverse between the two by foot over a period of days, it is not safe however: Various sink holes exist and little dry land for safe rest, turbulence and currents can sweep both the unwary and the prepared way, finally feral creatures and monsters (Sadly I failed to find evidence of any monsters, despite the natives insistence).
Passage requires hiring a guild, (called path-‘singers’ of all things) noisy individuals with ridicules outfits. Thankfully rafts and canoes can be hired if the idea of wading through bug and shark infested waters. Sadly the native is included. When I asked for a map they all laughed at me…
Due to the size of this bridge you can get out there without a guide, however even I recommend against it.
3 other points of interest:
The majority of electrical devices/ current holding devise are not allowed to be brought in, as are most mechanical devices.
At some point construction of a mag-rail (touched on later) had begun. Native workers started to disappear (some turning up dead) and they then refused to work on it, outside constructors were brought over but suffered the same fate, despite no progress being made in several years it is still technically an active project.
New Zealand, at the time of writing, had been declared a ‘Reservation’ area and my passage was denied. To my knowledge tribal practices are carried out, but it’s history and geological state are unknown. Heavy construction had been carried out however. Roomer is that a company called “Vulcan flight” bought the island, there is no evidence to support it. Though the business has collapsed(Note: founded in New London, all attempts to find info/docs where rejected, or had so much redacted text it would be a Stromschnellen government officers wet dream, or nightmare. Also three thugs so far have come to my door step and suggested I dropped the subject, one of which was a massive Chimera! The nerve! Perhaps my next book will be about this.)
• Name: attempts to rename the continent are shutdown, as are suggestions to combined the two under one name.
• History. Curiously much of the Australian history has been maintained, in a ‘great library.’ For now I will be brief.
Pre-Aether war Australia was steadily building a vast trade network, thanks to it booming mining industry it also provided a supply of metal and radioactive material to other nations, allowing them to gather alliances with others, it also enabled it to be close to the cutting edge of science, though still out classed. Interestingly, the economy/government power ratio appeared to be shifting, as well as several reports of morally ambiguous research cropping up.
Post Aether war found several craters in the northern, western and southern territories and a collapse of both government and economics, Aboriginal tribes had cropped up to claim ‘traditional land,’ reverting to a nomadic lifestyle. And about 50% of the plebeian population abandoned the coast to pursue something called a “Mad Max” dystopian life. Amusingly, out of these 20% died from poor survival skills and car crashes, and 10% died from the resulting war with the Aboriginal tribes. Of course, radiation fallout was a threat too and many where disappointed to find most of Australia was not a desert wasteland. The remaining survivors took to rebuilding cities on the coast, governed by economy, Science and “mate ship.” Curiously, a new martial was found, Aether infused ore. A semi rare metal(?) with a multitude of uses, this ensured a boost in research and, when contact with other lands was regained, a footing in economy. Previously believed to only be found there, small and useless traces of this substance have been found in other countries. However, Australia is tight lipped on the refining process, nor does it trade this ‘wonder-material’ easily. (Though products made with it are, resulting in hilarious trades by other nations in an attempt to gain some).
In the end Australia can be divided into three parts, along the coasts you’ll find futuristic cities, and the resulting slums. Where there is nature you’ll find some native tribe (not all human it seems) and most desert is ‘claimed’ by the “Mad Cyber riders.” Each developed separately though with trade between, with the exception of the MCR who attempted to have minimal contact with the outside world at the start.
Present day each system has settled into their own niece, and can feel like entire different worlds.
• Culture: Australia at its core is still a multi-cultural nation, and almost any race can be found in the cities and desert. As expected native species are in higher numbers and those use to colder climates are lower. As for the aboriginal tribes, a mixture of human and anthro can be found. More in-depth looks shall be found elsewhere. One common theme however appears to be a presence of cyber tec.
• Buildings: there is little in common with the architecture between the three, however mag-rails can be found in all areas, more commonly in the cities, and more so in the shining Jewel of Australia, Elradon. Rarer in the MCR region, it is recommended to avoid direct contact to these mag-rails with unprotected skin in the deserts.
• Government: A quick summery,
Civilization: Economy driven, the bigger your pockets the better, though lately they appear to be struggling with “skater rift raft.” Curiously most of the big bucks bend knee to the “New Dawn Library.”
Tribal: Elder/Wiseman focus, each tribe is “different” and has varied levels of distrust to outsides, though not enough to stop trade.
MCR: A laubale idea, they cling to some primitive ideology of 'might make right,' and expect everyone else to follow! I nearly died 3 times! Granted not all are hostile.
• Technology: variable, though with one common theme, one can find various hard light technology, and curiously tech assimilated from every other nation. Cars are aether powered and forges that are made of Light. Among the Aboriginal tribes are holographic screens, and aether fueled arrows. With highly durable tents that pack and unpack themselves into a disk that can rest in ones palm.
But what is truly their own. Refined Aether ore has been used in both military to civilian items, and the amount used refined to an art form, Do not be disillusion. While impressive it does not necessarily out class the rest of the world, with the exception of lighter batteries and more efficient filters, large quantities have been squandered into cars, rites, and architecture
.
And apparently bullets. Those are illegal, stupidly expensive, and only a fool would shoot them. Yet they are still produced and even one idiot used them in a Gatling gun, I’m told the results where explosive and reduced their popularity among the criminals, these bullets can be found anywhere however.
A far more common branch is that of magnetism, yes, the majority of their tech uses magnetism, unimpressive to say at first, until you learn that it also includes the earths magnetic field. It is more common in the city area, however, it’s most notable results are Hoverblades, boards and chairs, though the hover chair looks more like the bottom half of a cup. Hover boards and blades can be found in most places of the world, though used more so for amusement. In Australia the chair and board work in most places with high metal concentration. Though mostly designed to run on mag-rails, long beams of metal that provide pathways to many places, they can be used without, the Hoverblade however can run purely on the earth’s magnetic field alone, admittedly slowly.
There are two types of mag-rails, light and heavy, both are used to transport cargo, though more so the heavy duty one. Nor was the heavy rail designed with the blade, board or chair in mind, it doesn’t stop the youth though.
They are also founders (or perhaps revivers) of VR, an interesting endeavor though not wide spread yet, even in the heart of Australia
And Yes, hover cars are a thing, however their design makes them only function in the cities.
• Biases: overall very welcoming, yet each area has its own flaws, be it cash, tribal or… Ok the MCR tend only to care if you’re on their side, if even that, so I suppose they have equality?
• Military: again, varied, though the city police feel more like an army, and somehow everyone can turn the word ‘mate’ into a threat…
